Phytochemicals and biological activities of Persicaria odorata. (Lour.): A mini review
Abstract
Persicaria odorata is a perennial herb of the Persicaria genus, which belongs to the Polygonaceae family.P. odorata is commonly known in Malaysia as daun kesum and is widely used in cuisine and has different medicinal benefits. In grains, vegetables, fruits, and other plant foods, phytochemicals are characterized as bioactive nutrient plant chemicals that, beyond healthy diets, will have beneficial health advantages and decrease the possibility of major chronic illness. A variety of approaches can be used to identify and quantify phytochemicals. Several extraction methods should be applied to assess the selectivity of extraction from various natural sources under varied situations. Chromatography, electrophoresis, and spectroscopy techniques have been developed to separate and identify bioactive compounds. This review will highlight the bioactive compounds, methods for extraction, separation, and identification of bioactive compounds and the biological activities of P. odorata.
